Running eMule as a service?

Post by LazyManc »

Okies, this is aimed primarily at chris as he's been running emule on Reason for ages over terminal services.

The question: how the fuck do you stop it closing down when you log off?
(so far we've got round it by just closing the session window without logging off, but this feels, well, like a bad habit to get into)

I've tried using various tools (srvinstw.exe from windows 2k reskit / FireDaemon Service Manager) to install emule as a local system service, but although it installs and runs successfully it isn't actually displaying the GUI on the desktop over terminal services (not sure if it does locally, cba to lug the mon / kbrd etc under the stairs again).

So, have you been using the workaround all along or did you actually manage to install it as a service... or is there another way which im missing completely?

This is gonna be important next year if we implement your suggestion of blocking P2P apps through the router... which is probably a good idea with Brendan living with us ;)

Ok it's definitely running as a service because you can log into its webserver with no problem - so it is terminal services being shite.

I guess that means this isnt a workaround unless they add the option to completely stop all traffic in the client without killing it (even 1k up /1k down fucks up HL/CS/NS pings).

hmm, I guess we can use the web interface for controlling emule and just use terminal services to kill it when neccessary by shuting down the service...

And yes, it is 05:28 and this has been driving me nuts all night.

Just leave the system logged in via terminal services... That's all we do here.

Rule 1 - If there's a way that works, but seems simple and nasty, don't stay up till 6 trying to do it another way ;)

Seriously... I fail to see the problem with just leaving a suspended session... If anything, it logs in faster when you connect to it and you can run a load of other apps (We got SoulSeek, Kazaa, etc.) that don't have a web interface.

Fair enough then, back to a suspended session it is. Shame the web interface is a bit lacking in features, it's really cool otherwise.

And chris, wtf was so hard about mapping ports for emule? We could have had highID's for the last 2 years but you were too lazy :P

Its already in place m8, as soon as net_graph attempts anything other than flatlining, physical threats are made involving large sharp spikey things and various bodily cavities.

No sodding Natural Selection either ffs, it definitely fucks up the network. I keep running round telling to stop people downloading when I'm playing HL, but no-one's downloading and my ping is all over the shop.

NS should be rationed :P Half-Life is king etc

ns doesn't really hold the skills of a FPS game, its more of a newbie friendly teamwork game, which; with a little understanding can be played easily, no need for aim, movement etc :)

twitchyitis ownz you manc :D

n00b friendly??? have you played it? It's the complete opposite. Granted, it doesn't take the months of practice that it'd take to be a hardcore HLDM player, but skill is based more on knowledge of the tech tree, map strongpoints and leadership... You still need a decent aim if you dont want to end up a skulks dinner every 2 minutes though.

I guess its every man to his own, theres room for both, I just prefer a little more depth to my games.
