Okay, hands up whos on NTL?

Well as some of you are, like myself, you will glad to hear this "wonderful" piece of news that i just found on the BBC News site http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2740621.stm

Bascially it says that NTL from now on are planning on limiting customers to 1 GB a day. Yes it true, look for yourself.

Erm... I don't know how fast your connection is (yeah, this may be an issue for those > 512K), but I have problems downloading more than a gig a day. Yeah, I do it occaisonally, but this policy certainly isn't going to affect Mr Average net user.

In short, it's not an entirely bad thing... It's when they limit it to 500Mb or so I'll get annoyed...

Although, recent BT DNS fuckups have left me lucky to get 5Mbs a day...

That said, it's obviously been a heavy night for it, and me BT DSL is telling me it's managed 1.6Gb in 23 hours. Oops

I think the reason most people will be annoyed is not just the 1 gig cap, its the fact that NTL advertise the service as unlimited but how can it be when there is this download cap imposed. Also you think this is bad I have been reading that in Portugal there is 2 gig limit a month.

no the problem is that its connected all the time so thats sending a packet back and forth, when you click ping in gamespy thatll send packets to however many servers are in ure favourites box, playing games etc, people who arent stingy basterds and share files on kazaa, etc etc.

You'd be hard pressed to use 1Gb of bandwidth on anything other than file transfers.

Server pings, MSN, IRC, and all the other crap that windows shoots out isn't significant.

On the limiting note, my ADSL (Karoo) is 'limited' to 1Gb, although we've never had so much as an e-mail from them, which is surprising as at least 2 of us have a bloody great big queue of stuff on eMule lined up.

The Kingston limit got upped to 2GB a day a couple of months ago if I remember right, but like mid says its never been questioned when we often exceed it.

These caps just go to show how far behind other nations are when it comes to telecoms infrastructure... in places like Japan and Sweden you can have a domestic 8Mbps connection to the net.

Well, after reading the message properly, NTL are already enforcing this rule. That may explain why our houses net connection is so shit in an evening! Ah well, we always knew NTL were.....

Actually, i guess its not that bad a thing to do.

After all it wouldnt be fair to stop other peoples net connection when all most people are getting is porn and software, oops er...well things you can get off the net that is legal.....information, thats it!

The point is though Mr Blonde, that if they're advertising this service as an "Unlimited" service then they should be providing the necessary bandwidth to support it, and not expecting everyone to "get by" on less than half of what they've paid for cause the network can't handle it. Most people don't sign up for broadband to make web browsing quicker, its to reduce download times, but whats the point in downloading quicker on a 1mb line if you're only allowed the same amount as a 128k line could get in a day? No, i do get the point, but NTL can do what they when they like. They would have written it into people contracts so saying that they can do pretty much what they like. After all, the stuff im downloading isnt that important to me, nor to most people which is why they will limit it. Its a good idea mainly cause our fibre network is still shit and with the industry so bad other serivce providers may have to flow suite.

I wouldnt have choosen NTL as our 1st choice, but when its the only service in the area, you tend not to get much choice at all!

But, after reading the news just 2 seconds ago, NTL are now claiming that any one going over the 1 GB download 3-4 times in a 14 day period will be contacted. Ah well, i guess the phone calls will be coming soon.....

Yeah but it wasn't written into the contract people agreed to when they signed up for their 12 month subscription, it was added to the T&Cs on Friday afternoon without warning.

I've not read completely into the technical side of this bu from what I can gather it's more down to the cost to NTL of providing the service rather than any physical limits on the system.

you, like me live in an ntl area, as I think you will find it's cable you won't be able to get blueyonder in any area that gives ntl

If I move to an NTL area, I will still get NTL.

Those of you who are complaining obviously have no idea of the costs of running an ISP. Bandwidth is expensive, very much so. And companies like NTL have to pay off a lot of debt they have accumulated when they built the HUGE infrastructure in the first place.

So if a small proportion of users take up a large proportion of the bandwidth, they push up the price for everyone else.

I would like to see NTL making a helthy profit and reinvesting in services rather than being skint all the time, I would like to see the "whinging teenagers" who use up more than a gig a day downloading wanking material (cos they can't get laid) paying more for the provilege, and leave the rest of use with smaller telecoms bills.

I would love a 1 Mb line with a 500 Mb daily limit that comes in at £25 for example. Who here REALLY uses more than a gig a day anyway? Whoever you are, you are richer than me cos u keep having to buy new hard drives!!!

We live in the REAL world, not the "1996 Internet where everything is free world" You can't keep trying to get a free ride all of the time. Someone has got to pay for the bandwidth used, and I don't want to pay for you.

Unlimited probably refers to the fact that it is always on.
